A passenger train derailed on Sunday, August 6, resulting in at least 30 deaths, leaving over 100 passengers injured.
The Hazara Express, en route from Karachi to Rawalpindi, Pakistan faced a derailment of ten of its cars in the vicinity of the Sarhari railway station in Nawabshah.
The unfortunate incident saw casualties that included both women and children. Rescue operations were promptly initiated, with trapped passengers being assisted and the injured being taken to the Peoples Hospital in Nawabshah.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, speaking in Punjab, extended his condolences to the affected families and expressed hope for the recovery of the injured.
To address the situation, train services on the main line were paused. Potential reasons for the incident, as outlined by Minister for Railways Khwaja Saad Rafiq, could range from equipment malfunction to deliberate sabotage. An in-depth investigation is ongoing.
This incident is reminiscent of a train accident two months ago near Daharki, underscoring concerns about Pakistan’s railway infrastructure and its maintenance.
