An incident at Guaranteed Rate Field left two fans injured on Friday evening, Aug. 25, when shots were fired during a baseball game between the Chicago White Sox and the Oakland Athletics.
A female spectator, 42, sustained a gunshot wound to her leg. Another fan, a 26-year-old woman, was grazed in the abdomen by a bullet.
The 42-year-old, who remains in stable condition, was transported to the University of Chicago hospital for treatment. However, the young victim refused medical attention at the scene.
Tom Miller, an attendee seated just a couple of rows behind the injured, said, “It happened just two rows in front of me, and there was no one in front of us. Suddenly this lady started bleeding from the leg.”
The origin of the shots remains uncertain.
An official statement from the White Sox mentioned that investigators are still determining whether the shots were fired from inside or outside the stadium. The White Sox organization extended their wishes for a speedy recovery to the victims.
The game continued, ending with the Oakland A’s, winning with a score of 12-4.
Afterwards, the post-game concert, part of the “I Love the ’90s Tour” featuring performers Vanilla Ice, Rob Base, and Tone Loc, was canceled. The official reason provided was “technical difficulties.”
Rapper Vanilla Ice, set to headline the concert, addressed the situation in a video on TikTok. He said, “They didn’t deserve this. They’re just playing baseball. They showed up for their fans to play baseball.” He urged fans to continue supporting the team.
Authorities have not made any arrests, and the investigation is ongoing.
