Tragedy struck the Cuacnopalan-Oaxaca highway on August 22, as a bus ferrying 52 passengers, which included Mexican locals and Venezuelan migrants, encountered a severe collision with a trailer truck.
The crash led to the unfortunate demise of 16 individuals: eight men and eight women. Among the deceased were a minor and a Venezuelan national.
The remaining 36 passengers who suffered injuries due to the crash are now receiving medical care in Puebla-based hospitals.
The 52 passengers included 10 passengers from Venezuela who were hoping to gain legal entry to the US.
Details surrounding the cause of the accident remain unclear. Oaxaca’s Prosecutor’s Office is actively investigating the matter.
Governor Salomón Jara Cruz of Oaxaca took to Twitter to express his sorrow and support.
In a move to extend aid to the victims, Puebla’s interior ministry has begun coordination with both federal and state agencies.
