Shocking scenes unfolded at a wake, when mourners were astounded to witness their presumed deceased relative suddenly regain consciousness in her coffin.
Bella Montoya, 76, had been declared dead, yet amazingly woke up right before her intended burial in Babahoyo, Ecuador and began banging inside the coffin. A gripping video shows medics rushing to assist Montoya as soon as they realized she was actually alive. After detecting signs of life, they carefully extricated her from the coffin and placed her onto a stretcher.
Gilbert Balberán, Montoya’s son, revealed that the wake was held a mere four hours after his mother had been pronounced dead. The medical examiner had issued a death certificate, attributing her death to cardiorespiratory arrest. Balberán clarified that this arrest had induced catalepsy, a state characterized by a rigid body, diminished sensitivity to pain, and decreased bodily functions, including breathing. Hospital staff had declared Montoya dead under these misinterpreted circumstances.
Montoya was treated at the same hospital that prematurely declared her dead. Although she hung on to life for a week, she passed away and was buried in the same cemetery.
Balberán considered this incident a “miracle from God,” although he admits he is still struggling to grasp the reality of the situation. Consequently, Ecuador’s Ministry of Health has dispatched a technical team to investigate the incorrect issuance of the death certificate.
This is not the first such incident. Last year, during a funeral viewing, the family of a three-year-old Mexican girl noticed condensation on her coffin’s glass window. Further checks confirmed that the child was alive. However, she sadly passed away in the hospital later on.
