Maryland police have arrested a mother and her 19-year-old daughter for killing the family’s grandmother and attempting to conceal her remains.
Prince George’s County Police Department has disclosed that Candace Craig, aged 44, and Salia Hardy, aged 19, are facing charges relating to the death of 71-year-old Margaret Craig, which happened at a Landover property last month.
After receiving a 911 call from a worried individual who hadn’t seen Margaret Craig in some time, police officers performed a welfare check at the home on June 2. The officers were met at the door by Candace Craig, who permitted them to enter the residence to search for Margaret.
The basement yielded a strong smell of human decay, as stated in a press release by the Prince George’s County Police Department. A preliminary examination, corroborated by further evidence and questioning, indicates that Candace Craig murdered her mother on May 23. Hardy is believed to have assisted her mother in disposing of the remains the following day.
Reportedly, the pair dismembered their relative using a chainsaw and burned the remains on a charcoal grill. The scene yielded evidence of human remains, blood, and materials implicated in the murder and subsequent cleanup.
The motive for the killing remains unclear and is an ongoing matter of investigation.
Candace Craig is now facing first and second-degree murder charges, while Hardy is charged with being an accessory after the fact. Both are currently detained. The cause of death and victim’s identity are pending verification by the medical examiner.
