Two brothers tragically lost their lives in a cliff diving accident at Fort Gibson Lake, Oklahoma.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol received an emergency call regarding a potential drowning at the lake on Friday, June 9. Their initial investigation disclosed that only one out of the three individuals who jumped into the water from the Rocky Point area managed to surface.
The deceased brothers were part of a group of four engaging in cliff diving when a sudden storm developed. The unexpected gusts of wind and large waves made it extremely challenging for them to get back to shore.
Upon noticing his brother’s struggle, 16-year-old Kalub Mayton dived back into the water in an attempt to rescue his sibling, unfortunately both brothers drowned.
In the wake of the tragic incident, a dedicated team of divers initiated a rigorous search operation and were able to recover the bodies of Kalub and his older brother Damian Mayton, 19, the following morning in 12 feet of water.
The Mayton brothers were well-loved members of their community. Damian was a graduate of Fort Gibson Public Schools, and Kalub was a current student. Their unexpected deaths have profoundly impacted their community. The school district expressed their sorrow through a Facebook post, emphasizing the cherished memories the brothers left behind.
The Mayton family lives in the town of Okay, situated about 50 miles south of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
