A six-year-old child unintentionally shot his baby brother multiple times, at their home in Detroit, Michigan.
Assistant Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald, addressing the media during a news conference on June 7, expressed his dismay, remarking, “Here we are again. Once again another senseless, preventable, horrible incident.”
The incident took place in a house on Tennessee Street, where a one-year-old boy was happily bouncing in a chair. It was then that his older brother gained access to a semiautomatic firearm and fired it.
The baby suffered two gunshot wounds, one in the cheek and another in the shoulder. Thankfully, despite the severity of the injuries, the child managed to survive. Chief Fitzgerald expressed gratitude, stating, “We’re very, very fortunate that the child is still with us.”
During the time of the incident, the baby’s father was in the backyard while the mother was down the street.
An investigation is currently underway, and law enforcement has obtained a search warrant for the home. It was noted that the gun involved in the incident is legally registered. The six-year-old involved in the shooting is cooperating with the authorities, and no charges have been filed.
According to the New England Journal of Medicine, firearm-related injuries are currently the leading cause of death among children in the United States.
