An elderly couple, who had just celebrated their 50th anniversary, were found brutally murdered along with the wife’s elderly mother in their home in Newton, Massachusetts on Sunday, June 25.
The identities of the victims remain undisclosed, but their friends and neighbors described them as a compassionate and kind Italian couple in their 70s, who were beloved members of their community.
The shocking discovery was made by a concerned neighbor who had gone to check on the couple at around 10:14 am, after they did not show up for church. The bodies of the couple and the wife’s mother, who was in her late 90s, displayed evidence of stab wounds and blunt-force trauma. Authorities confirmed signs of forced entry into the home, indicating a possible break-in.
The victims had been scheduled to renew their vows at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, a place they had long supported as devoted parishioners. Jim Sbordone, a retired lieutenant of the Newton Fire Department and a close friend of the victims, expressed deep sorrow, emphasizing their genuine and selfless nature. He called the couple “fantastic Italian people who wouldn’t hurt a soul” and added, “These were great people. This isn’t the type of thing that happens in the neighborhood. I hope it never happens again to anybody.”
In light of the tragic events, authorities advised residents to remain vigilant, secure their homes, and review any surveillance footage that might aid the investigation. The Middlesex District Attorney, Marian Ryan, urged the community to report any suspicious activities to the police.
As the investigation continues, Newton Police Chief John F. Carmichael Jr. assured the public of increased police presence in the area to ensure their safety.
