At least ten people were killed, and nine others were injured when a gunfight broke out during a car show on Saturday.
The incident took place shortly after 2 pm in San Vicente, located on the Pacific coast of the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico. The violence erupted on the final day of a two-day all-terrain car rally.
Eyewitness videos circulating on social media showed the harrowing scenes of the shooting. The footage depicted off-road vehicles lined up along a road and the chilling sounds of screams and multiple rounds of gunfire. According to local officials, several assailants armed with rifles got out of two gray vans parked at a gas station and opened fire on the car rally participants gathered there.
Numerous agencies arrived at the scene, including municipal and state police, the Marines, the Fire Department, and the Mexican Red Cross. Alarming footage captured people fleeing in panic as gunfire erupted in the arena, with several people seen lying on the ground.
A barrage of bullets ensued before the gunmen quickly retreated, re-entering their vans and fleeing the scene.
The injured victims were transported to hospitals in northern Baja California under the care of Mexico’s Red Cross. While the identities and nationalities of the victims have yet to be disclosed, the director of Agencia Fronteriza de Noticias attributed the mass shooting to an ongoing conflict between the CJNG cartel and the Sinaloa cartel, as reported by the Times of San Diego.
In response to the shooting, Attorney General Ricardo Ivan Carpio Sanchez initiated a special investigation.
