A white female employee of Bellevue Hospital in New York City has earned herself an unwelcome reputation as a “Karen.”
A video captured her encounter when she allegedly attempted to take a CitiBike that had already been claimed and paid for by a young black bike rider.
The clip was posted on Twitter and viewed by over six million people, leading to widespread criticism of the woman’s behavior. Dressed in hospital scrubs, she can be seen arguing with the legitimate CitiBike customer, attempting to grab the bike from him, and screaming that he is threatening her.
“Help! Help me! Please, help me,” she yells, trying to attract the attention of people on the street. The young man refuses to let go of the bike and continues to explain that he has already paid for it.
However, this doesn’t stop the woman from creating a scene. She even goes so far as to claim that he is threatening her fetus. The young man doesn’t touch her but stands his ground as she persists in her fight for the bike.
As the video clip continues, a white man dressed in scrubs, presumably from the same hospital, approaches the chaotic scene and attempts to intervene. The woman starts crying, trying to gain sympathy. The young man is supported by a group of his friends who assert that the woman is feigning her hysterics.
The man in scrubs, apparently a coworker, tries to calm her down, and eventually, she agrees to choose another bicycle.
Although the incident went viral on social media and the internet, it was not reported to the New York Police Department. However, when contacted by the media, the police stated that they were aware of the circulating video.
