New York City’s esteemed Met Gala once again pulled together the crème de la crème of the fashion industry, this year to honor the legendary designer Karl Lagerfeld, including top stars such as Nicole Kidman.
This annual event, a fundraising initiative for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s renowned Costume Institute, is famed for its high-profile attendees and opulent outfits. The theme this year, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” provided an opportunity for guests to emulate Lagerfeld’s iconic fashion and pay homage to his legacy.
Attendees were urged to dress in styles reminiscent of Lagerfeld’s unique aesthetic, characterized by his signature white ponytail, dark shades, and affection for his pet cat, Choupette. The color scheme of black, white, blush, and pearls was a nod to Lagerfeld’s timeless Chanel designs.
Nicole Kidman was a standout, sparkling in a classic Chanel Haute Couture dress from Lagerfeld’s 2004 collection, previously seen on her in a Chanel No. 5 ad.
In a departure from last year’s Marilyn Monroe-worn dress which involved an extreme diet, Kim Kardashian opted for a pearl-adorned Schiaparelli ensemble inspired by a recent visit to Lagerfeld’s Parisian office. Her sisters, Kylie and Kendall Jenner, also drew attention with Kendall in a sequined black and silver bodysuit and Kylie in a striking red dress with a contrasting blue drape.
Rapper Lil Nas X impressed with a pearl-studded, silver ensemble. Other celebrities displayed creations from brands closely linked to Lagerfeld, like actress Margot Robbie, star of the new film, “Barbie,” in Chanel, Allison Williams, known for the HBO series “Girls,” in Patou, British model Kate Moss in Fendi, and British model and actress, Cara Delevingne in a Lagerfeld Couture piece.
Rihanna wowed in a pure white gown, while an expectant Serena Williams opted for a form-fitting black dress embellished with pearls. Rapper Doja Cat paid tribute to Lagerfeld’s cat, Choupette, with cat-themed makeup and a glittering silver dress. Singer Dua Lipa donned a white Chanel corset dress originally modeled by Claudia Schiffer in 1992, and Lila Moss, English model and daughter of Kate Moss, wore a peach gown from one of Lagerfeld’s last Fendi collections. Actress Olivia Wilde seized attention in a novel violin dress from Lagerfeld’s 1983 collection.
The 2023 Met Gala was an unforgettable evening, underscoring Lagerfeld’s lasting influence on the world of fashion.
Ever since its inception in 1948, the Met Gala has been a major event in the fashion landscape. Over the years, this prestigious occasion has lured celebrities, designers, and fashion mavens to display their creative interpretations of various themes.
Previous standout themes include 2018’s “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” focusing on opulent religious attire, and 2019’s “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” highlighting the eccentric side of fashion.
The 2020 Met Gala had initially planned the theme “About Time: Fashion and Duration” to investigate the interplay between fashion and time. However, the pandemic led to its postponement and eventual cancellation.
The 2021 Met Gala’s theme, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” was chosen to commemorate American fashion and its multifaceted influences, emphasizing the evolving fashion language in the United States. The event was rescheduled from its customary May date to September 2021 due to the pandemic. The 2022 theme also featured American fashion.
