House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is pressing the FBI to comply with a congressional request to release an informant file. The unverified file allegedly implicates President Biden in foreign bribery scandals during his time as vice president.
McCarthy shared his expectations after a conversation with FBI Director Christopher Wray.
In a Fox News interview, McCarthy underscored the oversight role Congress has over the FBI. He stressed the necessity of examining the file, which the House Oversight Committee had subpoenaed following a whistleblower’s allegation of a “criminal” pay-to-play scheme involving Biden.
The FBI responded with a six-page letter expressing objections and refusing to release the file.
The Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, James Comer (R-KY), reiterated the demand for the file. He challenged the FBI’s claim that the content of the file was already public information.
Despite a deadline of May 10, the FBI did not submit the file. The Bureau cited the need to protect sources and stated that the information was already publicly accessible.
Comer responded by noting that specific details in the file, which was reportedly created or amended in June 2020, were absent from previously referenced materials and public reports.
The whistleblower initially brought the existence of the file to the attention of Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA). Grassley then relayed this information to Comer.
An FBI spokesperson pointed out that the allegations contained in the file were unverified. The spokesperson emphasized that just because information is documented does not mean it is accurate. They warned against the possible damage that could result from releasing unverified or incomplete information.
