On Thursday, May 18, U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stirred up the political landscape as she formally introduced articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden.
The move, viewed as highly controversial, stems from Greene’s harsh criticism of President Biden’s handling of the upswing in migrant crossings along the U.S.-Mexico border.
In a fiery statement, Representative Greene chastised President Biden for what she described as a serious misuse of his powers. She argued that the President had deliberately undermined national security by failing to adequately enforce immigration laws and secure the border. She went further to claim that the Biden administration’s relaxed stance had permitted millions of undocumented individuals from roughly 160 countries to illegally enter the U.S., all the while depriving border patrol of crucial resources and policy tools.
Her allegations did not end there. The articles of impeachment introduced by Greene pointedly address the surge in illegal border crossings, inclusive of the trafficking of lethal drugs like fentanyl, a problem she attributes directly to the Biden administration. Furthermore, she accused the administration of contravening the law by releasing undocumented immigrants into the U.S. interior, a marked departure from the Trump administration’s Title 42 border policy, which quickly expelled migrants without asylum hearings due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This policy was maintained under the Biden administration until it was recently rescinded.
However, the road to impeachment appears steep, given that House Republicans lack the required majority to impeach President Biden. This current attempt echoes previous failed bids to impeach the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, suggesting a pattern of futile impeachment endeavors from the Republican front.
The second article of impeachment proposed by Greene alleges that President Biden has put Americans at risk by permitting undocumented immigrants, who may potentially be COVID-19 positive, to enter the country without adequate screening. The third article accuses the President of provoking a national security crisis through his border policies, thereby posing a risk to American citizens.
Despite these accusations, both President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas continue to assert that the border remains closed and have consistently discouraged migrant crossings. Responding swiftly to Greene’s impeachment attempt, a White House spokesperson highlighted the political motivations driving her actions. Furthermore, the spokesperson drew attention to Greene’s past contentious remarks, such as her calls to defund the FBI and her involvement following the January 6 insurrection.
