Authorities have filed first-degree premeditated murder charges against the former boyfriend of a Michigan mother who was fatally shot in front of their daughter at the car dealership where she worked.
The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office charged Gregory Keyier-Deniro Davis, 44, with first-degree premeditated murder, assault with intent to murder, unlawful possession of a gun, felonious assault, and four felony firearm second offense counts. These charges stem from the murder of Annie Salem Namou, 40.
According to prosecutors, the incident took place in the parking lot of the Legend Motors car dealership in Royal Oak Township, Michigan, at 8:40 am on May 20. Davis allegedly used his vehicle to block Namou’s car, trapping her. As Namou attempted to seek help by exiting her vehicle, Davis allegedly shot her while she was running away and fired at her again at close range with a 12-gauge semi-automatic shotgun. Their young daughter witnessed the events from the passenger seat of her mother’s car.
Davis surrendered to authorities later in the day.
Expressing her shock and sadness, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald described the incident as horrific and tragic. She highlighted the alarming statistic that an average of 70 women are shot dead by intimate partners monthly in the United States. McDonald emphasized that the crime occurred in a place of business, just a few feet from other employees.
Prosecutors have charged Davis with first-degree murder, the most serious offense under Michigan law.
Davis was arraigned on Tuesday, May 23, and is currently held in the Oakland County Jail. If found guilty, Davis could receive a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Michigan has no death penalty and is among the three jurisdictions that have never executed a person since joining the United States.
