A tragic incident occurred in Iowa when a family’s pet dog attacked and killed a nine-month-old baby, leaving the child’s 49-year-old grandmother critically injured in their home.
On Thursday morning, May 4, at approximately 7:20 am, officers from the Waterloo Police Department responded to the violent episode involving the baby and the grandmother. The woman, injured while attempting to protect the baby, was initially taken to Allen Hospital before being transferred to the University of Iowa Hospital for further treatment.
Sadly, the baby was declared dead at the scene. Following this heartbreaking event, the dog, a boxer/hound mix, was euthanized by animal control officers and subsequently taken to Iowa State University for further examination. Police Captain Jason Feaker confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and the victims’ names have yet to be released.
Unfortunately, this is not the only recent deadly dog attack. In March, a three-year-old boy named Xavier Carr suffered life-threatening injuries when a Belgian Malinois dog attacked him while his family was caring for the animal. Xavier’s arm was nearly severed, prompting his father, Joshua Carr, to call 911 and use his belt as a makeshift tourniquet to stop the bleeding. Doctors later credited the father’s quick thinking with saving his son’s life after the arm was surgically reattached.
Another incident in February involved a six-year-old girl named Lily Norton, whose face was bitten by a dog, resulting in a 12-hour surgery and over a thousand stitches. The attack occurred at a friend’s house while the children were playing cards.
Additionally, April saw two severe dog attacks in Minnesota. On April 7, a child was attacked by a pit bull in a Brooklyn park, and roughly a week later, a 22-year-old man was fatally mauled by four dogs in a Brooklyn Center home while dog-sitting for a relative.
