An 18-year-old college baseball player was randomly struck by a stray bullet during a game on Saturday, April 29.
The incident occurred in the afternoon in Spring Lake Park, in Texarkana, Texas.
The Texarkana Texas Police Department said the player, whom they declined to identify publicly, was hit by a stray bullet from a nearby neighborhood dispute.
Emergency responders transported the baseball player to St. Michael Hospital, where he underwent surgery for the gunshot wound.
Reports of shots fired on Lynda Street, located west of Spring Lake Park, coincided with the collapse of the baseball player and the Texarkana Police Department in Texas connected the incidents. While some officers assisted the victim at the ball field, others investigated on Lynda Street, seeking witnesses and evidence.
During their inquiry, the police discovered several shell casings in front of a residence on Lynda Street. Their findings indicated that a disturbance at that location escalated into a shootout between two men. Regrettably, one of the stray rounds traveled nearly 400 yards, striking the unsuspecting player standing in the bull pen.
The department identified Kamauri Butler, 17, and DeMarco Banks, 20, as the individuals involved in the shooting and issued felony warrants for their arrest. Following the incident, both Butler and Banks fled the area. Butler is wanted for aggravated assault, and Banks is wanted for deadly conduct.
Police arrested three other people at the home in connection with the shooting. Officers arrested Yankeengea Smith, 49, for unlawfully possessing a gun as a felon and for possessing controlled substances, including methamphetamine and Ecstasy pills; Nathan Moore, 19, for evidence tampering and possessing marijuana; and Marcell Beaver, 19, for possessing marijuana.
Fortunately, the injured baseball player is in stable condition and is expected to recover.
As a result of the incident, the baseball game was canceled, and the Scout-O-Rama event, taking place in another area of the park, was ended prematurely.
