In a horrific accident on Tuesday, May 9, a bus carrying several passengers veered off a bridge, killing at least 22 people, including three children, and leaving over 30 individuals injured.
The mishap occurred around 8:30 a.m. while the bus was en route to Indore in India, reportedly caused by the driver dozing off behind the wheel.
As reported by The Times of India, the bus crashed through the protective railing of the bridge, plummeting into a dry riverbed below. The terrifying descent ended in a devastating impact against the rocky terrain below, which fatally crushed numerous passengers on impact. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the driver allegedly fled the scene.
Despite the horror and shock, local community members displayed commendable courage and solidarity. They swiftly responded to the incident, using tractors and trolleys to ferry the injured to nearby medical facilities before professional ambulance services could reach the accident site.
Following the catastrophic event, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan promised financial aid of roughly $4,800 for the bereaved families. In addition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced financial assistance from the National Relief Fund – $600 for those critically injured and $300 for individuals with minor injuries.
