2 Dead in Kansas Domestic Dispute Murder/Suicide

A mother and daughter in Kansas were killed by the mother’s husband in an apparent murder-suicide. Another woman was shot but survived with non-life threatening injuries.

Kristy C. Thow, a 29-year-old resident of Shawnee, and her mother, Penny Smith, 50, succumbed to their injuries at a local hospital following a domestic shooting at the mother’s residence in Kansas City. The Kansas City Police Department released multiple press statements on the incident.

Shortly before 11 pm on May 18, police received a distress call and responded to the residence. They discovered three women outside the house suffering from critical gunshot wounds.

During their investigation, the police also discovered the lifeless body of a man inside the house, identified as 51-year-old Christopher Smith. It appeared that Smith had taken his own life, succumbing to an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to raise funds for Thow’s surviving daughter’s college education and support other remaining family members. The fundraiser, organized by Kristy’s aunt, pays tribute to her memory, describing her as a dedicated single mother who cared for her daughter, Camilla, and played a role in raising her sister’s children.

The fundraiser also reveals that Kristy courageously sacrificed her own life, enduring multiple gunshots while protecting her sister and their mother from a deranged domestic abuser. Smith leaves behind two other daughters and three grandchildren.

The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department is investigating the incident.
