In Keene, Texas, a 12-year-old child and a 20-year-old man were charged with murder following the fatal shooting of a Sonic drive-in employee.
Authorities reported that the 12-year-old used an AR-15 rifle to kill the employee during a confrontation with another man, who has also been arrested and charged for his role in the shooting.
On Saturday, May 13, at around 10 pm, the Keene Police Department received multiple calls reporting a shooting at the drive-through restaurant. Officers arrived at the scene and found 32-year-old Matthew Davis with several gunshot wounds. He was taken to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately, he did not survive his injuries.
According to the police, 20-year-old Angel Gomez was involved in a dispute in the Sonic parking lot with other people in his car when Davis, an employee at Sonic, intervened. The altercation became physical after Davis approached Gomez, who was allegedly urinating in the back of the parking lot. The 12-year-old suspect, a passenger in Gomez’s car whose identity has not been revealed, grabbed the AR-15 rifle from the vehicle and began shooting. Davis was struck by the bullets and later died in the hospital.
Both the 12-year-old and Gomez fled the scene following the shooting. Gomez later returned to the location and was apprehended by the cops. The 12-year-old was found at a residence in Rio Vista, where several firearms were also recovered. Gomez has been charged with tampering with evidence for taking the AR-15 and leaving the scene, and his charges may be escalated to murder. The 12-year-old is currently facing murder charges and is being held at a juvenile detention facility in Granbury.
Matthew Davis, who had recently moved to Keene and started working at the Sonic restaurant just weeks before the incident, is survived by a ten-year-old son.
