A man in Australia died in a tragic way that could have been avoided.
A devastating accident at a Melbourne car wash resulted in the death of an elderly man. The man got out of his car to enter an access code and was tragically caught in the car wash machinery when the cycle started.
The car wash is reportedly owned by Chevron, an international oil company, which has been charged with four violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The company’s legal representatives appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on April 17.
Eyewitnesses reported that the man tried to get back into his car as the machine started to move, but was only able to get one foot inside before becoming trapped in the car wash.
The Country Fire Authority reached the scene quickly, but it took them around 16 minutes to free the man from the machinery. Although paramedics were able to revive him, he later passed away due to asphyxia caused by the prolonged lack of oxygen to his brain.
WorkSafe Victoria has accused Chevron of not taking the necessary precautions to eliminate risks. The oil company failed to display warning signs telling drivers to stay in their vehicles during the wash cycle and neglected to add safety features like anti-collision bars or systems for detecting potential impacts between machinery and obstacles within the wash bay.
Court documents reveal that Chevron could have avoided the risk by installing boom gates that allowed entry into the wash bay only after inputting a valid access code. The company could also have employed sensors to detect vehicles in the wash bay and halt the wash cycle until the vehicle was clear.
In a separate car wash accident in Colmar, Pennsylvania, a 77-year-old driver crashed through a gate and flipped his car on its side inside the facility. Bystanders were baffled as to how the car overturned and noted that they had never seen anything like it before.
Rescuers spent about 90 minutes removing the car’s roof and freeing the victim, who was pinned between the car body and the door. The driver was taken to the hospital with injuries to his left leg, and the car wash temporarily closed for repairs.
Although such incidents are uncommon, they underscore the importance of exercising caution when using car wash services. Customers should adhere to posted instructions and stay in their vehicles during the wash cycle. Car wash operators must ensure proper equipment maintenance and implement appropriate safety measures to prevent accidents.
