Five people are dead, and two others are injured after a 15-year-old terrorized a neighborhood and an adjacent greenway.
Police responded to the Hedingham neighborhood in Northeastern Raleigh a little after 5 PM on Thursday night where they found two shooting victims. The suspected shooter had fled the crime scene via the Neuse River Greenway, a 27-mile-long trail that runs through the backyards of many houses in the neighborhood. He shot 5 more people on or around the trail, killing 3 of them.

The suspected shooter eluded law enforcement for several more hours keeping the neighborhood and surrounding areas on edge, Police issued warnings to area residents, urging them to stay inside their houses until the situation was resolved. The suspect was finally apprehended and taken into custody at around 8 PM. The juvenile suspect was suffering from life threatening injuries and is presently in critical condition at a local hospital. Officials have not released any specifics on how the suspect was injured.
This morning Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson released the names of those fatally injured: Raleigh Police Officer Gabriel Torres, 29; Nicole Conners, 53; Susan Karnatz, 49; Mary Marshall, 34; James Thompson, 16.
Officer Torres was off duty and on his way into work when he was shot. A second officer was shot during the encounter and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. That officer has since been released from the hospital. The other shooting victim, a 59-year-old female, remains hospitalized and in critical condition.
Police have not released any additional information about the incident and have not commented on a motive.
