Emergency personnel was dispatched to a home off Quail Ridge Road in Truro, MA (Cape Cod), for what was believed to be a routine wellness check. Upon arrival, authorities found a man standing near a small fire burning in the home’s front yard. Upon closer examination of the fire, it was determined that a human body was burning. The male standing close to the fire ran into the house and locked himself inside once it became apparent that responders understood what was in the fire.
A local SWAT unit was called to the scene, eventually entering the home and taking the subject into custody. Thirty-four-year-old Adam Howe was apprehended by police and charged with murder. Evidence obtained by police suggests that the victim is Howe’s 70-year-old mother, Susan Howe. An informant who knows the family and situation told DailyMail.com that Howe and his wife, apparently both heroin addicts, had been living in the home with his mother. She had given him the ultimatum of cleaning up his drug addiction or getting out. Things had not improved, and she was ready to throw her son out of the house.
Adam Howe is charged with the murder of his mother. He will undergo a mental health evaluation while being held in police custody. Bail, if applicable, has not yet been set.
Susan Howe was the chair of the Truro Commission on Disabilities and the president of the Truro Historical Society. According to her Facebook page, Susan also worked at a clothing store in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. She was weeks away from celebrating her 71st birthday. The local Truro government issued a statement on Howe’s death: “Our hearts are heavy with the news that we have lost a beloved member of our community, Susan Howe.”
