Michelle Obama Defends Olympic Gymnasts Against Critics

During the 2024 Paris Olympics on Monday, August 5, an incident involving American gymnasts Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles and Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade sparked a widespread debate. The athletes’ gesture of bowing to Andrade on the podium attracted attention and responses from several perspectives, including a response from former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Biles, 27, and Chiles, 23, showed respect to Andrade, 25, during the medal distribution ceremony for the floor exercise. Andrade won the gold medal, with Biles receiving silver and Chiles earning bronze (which was disputed and taken away on August 10 – see below). The act, intended to recognize Andrade’s victory and her incredible journey of recovering from three anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, elicited a range of responses.

Marlon Humphrey, a Baltimore Ravens cornerback, expressed his dissatisfaction with the act on social media, describing it as “literally disgusting.” His statement quickly gained attention, triggering a strong response from the gymnasts’ fans and supporters. Many defended Biles and Chiles, underlining the importance of Andrade’s accomplishment and the exemplary sportsmanship shown by the American gymnasts.

One commentator questioned whether showing sportsmanship among three Black women who have excelled in their sports could be viewed as disgusting. This sentiment echoed the thoughts of many who regarded the action as a testament to camaraderie and respect.

Michelle Obama, known for her advocacy for women and girls in sports, addressed the controversy. She expressed admiration for the athletes’ display of unity and sportsmanship, highlighted their evident mutual respect, and congratulated Rebeca, Jordan, and Simone on her “X” page. Her comments clearly indicated her support for Biles and Chiles.

In an interview with NBC, Biles explained the motive behind the gesture. She emphasized the importance of sportsmanship and supporting fellow competitors, irrespective of the result. Both Biles and Chiles expressed happiness for their competitor, recognizing her exceptional performance and hard work, and particularly highlighted her floor routine as the best of the day and of the Olympics.

The incident underscores the deep connections that athletes can form, extending beyond national and competitive borders. Andrade, who has had an impressive performance at the Paris Games, with four medals including a gold in the floor final, expressed her appreciation for the support. “We can show the Black Power,” Andrade said after winning the gold medal, acknowledging the shared heritage and solidarity among the athletes.

Conversely, Humphrey faced significant criticism for his comments, which led him to post a follow-up on social media. “I’m lowkey getting cooked right now,” he admitted, recognizing the severe criticism he received.

Biles, often recognized as one of the greatest gymnasts of all time, continues to inspire with her performances and conduct. Chiles has also established herself as a crucial part of Team USA, securing a gold and a bronze in these games.

After her celebrated win, Jordan Chiles officially lost her bronze medal in the floor event at the Paris Olympics after a Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) judge ruled in favor of two Romanian gymnasts on August 10.

The judge at CAS sided with Romanian gymnasts Ana Barbosu — who was the original bronze medalist — and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, who argued that Chiles had been mistakenly awarded third place during the floor final on August 5.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Sunday, August 11, that Barbosu will now receive the bronze medal.
