On Monday morning, December 18, 2023, two five-year-old twins, a boy and a girl, were found dead in their apartment on East 175th Street in the Bronx, New York City.
The children were found lifeless on the floor of their apartment, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD). Assistant Chief Benjamin Gurley, the commanding officer of the NYPD Patrol Borough Bronx, confirmed at a press conference that the twins showed no visible signs of trauma.
Their mother, who discovered the children after she took a shower, and alerted the authorities, was reportedly in such a state of shock and distress that she required hospitalization at BronxCare Health System for observation.
The children’s father, who was not at home during the incident, rushed back upon receiving the news.
The twins had reportedly been unwell for a few days and were sent home from school the previous week. They remained at home sick on the day of their passing.
The New York City Fire Department inspected the air quality in the building, ruling out carbon monoxide poisoning as a factor in the children’s deaths. The family reportedly had no history of domestic violence or open records with the city’s Administration for Children’s Services.
The NYPD is conducting a thorough investigation into the deaths, with both the Medical Examiner and Crime Scene Unit involved in the process. The initial stages of the investigation have yet to determine if foul play was involved.
