A shooting at Mentor Green Mobile Home Park in Mentor, Ohio, on the afternoon of November 16, 2023, resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including the shooter, and left another person injured.
The incident began shortly after 4:30 pm when police responded to reports of shots fired at 7134 Mentor Avenue.
On arrival, they discovered Laura Colon, 62, the property manager, deceased. Terrence Mathis, 63, and Thomas Galizia, 81, were taken to a nearby hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries. Charles Skala, 63, was treated for injuries to his shoulder and thigh and is said to be recuperating in a hospital.
Ante Logarusic, communications director for the City of Mentor, informed that the assailant, 47-year-old Jason Norris, had holed up in a mobile home at the park, located near the Willoughby border. After a standoff lasting several hours, officers entered the home and found Norris deceased from a gunshot wound that was self-inflicted. Norris, an Army veteran also had multiple firearms and ammunition rounds in the home.
Residents of the mobile home park, which primarily houses individuals aged 55 and older, recounted the incident. A neighbor living opposite Norris suggested that he may have been facing eviction prior to the shooting. An argument between Norris and Colon about an eviction letter possibly led to her shooting, and the shooting of the other men who came to her aid.
Following the event, around 30 residents were temporarily relocated to the Mentor Senior Center for the evening, as police and emergency services worked to secure the area. The road along Mentor Avenue from the Willoughby border to Ohio 306 remained closed until about 11:15 pm.
A 23-year resident expressed his concern for the well-being of the victims. He characterized the mobile home park as generally a very quiet community.
