Broadway is in mourning following the unexpected death of accomplished actor Chris Peluso, who passed away on August 15 at the age of 40.
Best known for his roles in hit musicals “Mamma Mia” and “Wicked,” Peluso’s passing leaves behind his wife, Jessica Gomes, and two children, Aria Li and Caio Lian. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
A graduate of the University of Michigan, Peluso was remembered fondly by his alma mater. Linda Goodrich, interim chair of the musical theater program, shared a touching tribute on Instagram, describing him as a “loving, charismatic, and divinely gifted” person.
Throughout his career, Peluso amassed an impressive array of stage credits, including roles in Broadway productions such as “Assassins,” “Lestat,” “The Glorious Ones,” and “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.” He also gained acclaim for his performances in London’s West End in shows like “Funny Girl,” “Show Boat,” “Miss Saigon,” and “The Woman in White.”
Peluso’s death follows his disclosure of a personal struggle with schizoaffective disorder, a mental health condition that had led to severe paranoia and hindered his ability to perform.
In September 2022, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to support his mental wellness treatment, raising over $25,000 before being halted in November.
Peluso had expressed gratitude for the support and had resumed auditioning, acknowledging that his recovery would be an ongoing process with therapy and medical help.
Peluso’s contribution to the world of theater will be deeply missed, and he leaves behind a legacy of unforgettable performances that will live on in the hearts of fans and colleagues alike.
