Law enforcement personnel in Veracruz, Mexico, have identified at least 13 dismembered bodies stored in ice chests and freezers. The remains were discovered on August 14 in two residences in Poza Rica, that were the suspected sites of kidnappers.
The lead prosecutor, Veronica Hernandez, has indicated that the count may grow as identification efforts are underway.
With six individuals already detained concerning this incident, the underlying motive has not been uncovered.
Additionally, local news sources reported that several kidnapping victims were found and rescued from one of these properties.
Veracruz Governor Cuitlahuac Garcia has conveyed deep concerns, suggesting a possible fallout from feuds among criminal groups. He pointed towards the potential targeting of gang members’ offspring but did not confirm this link to the remains found.
Notably, Mexico’s missing persons records depict a grim reality, accounting for over 110,000 individuals.
