Tragedy struck a popular seaside resort when tourists watched in horror as a shark attacked and devoured a man just a few feet from the crowded beach.
The horrific incident occurred at the Dream Beach Hotel in Hurghada, Egypt, with the victim being a Russian national, as reported by Russian media.
The man, 23-year-old Vladimir Popov, had been living in Egypt for several months.
Russia’s consul-general in Hurghada, Viktor Voropayev, confirmed the fatal incident. He detailed how Popov yelled for his father, who was on the beach, while desperately trying to ward off the shark. Video footage of the horrifying event captured hotel staff alerting swimmers to leave the water as the shark’s fin loomed. Despite Popov’s attempts to resist, onlookers soon realized that his situation was hopeless. A chilling phrase, “It’s eating his remains now,” was heard from a witness as the shark finally dragged Popov under, ending any hope of rescue.
As per Russian media, Popov’s girlfriend was able to swim to safety. Her grief was evident, however, as she wept openly on the beach, consoled by those around her.
Following the incident, authorities moved swiftly to prohibit tourists from swimming at the resort. The horrifying scene left witnesses in shock, with some commenting on the quick actions of the rescuers, and others recounting the dreadful sight of the shark consuming its victim. The shark thought to be responsible for the deadly attack was subsequently tracked down and killed.
