A disturbing event unfolded during a funeral service for a 10-year-old victim of gun violence.
The funeral was in progress in Maryland for Arianna Davis, when gunfire erupted, leaving two people shot, one of whom subsequently died. The shooting happened on Tuesday afternoon, June 6, at Washington National Cemetery in Prince George’s County.
Major David Blazer of the Prince George’s County Police provided insights at a press conference. Police were called to a disturbance at the cemetery around 1:15 pm and found a man and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds upon arrival. Unfortunately, the male victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The injured woman is currently receiving medical attention for non-life-threatening injuries. According to Major Blazer, those involved in the shooting were not directly connected to the funeral, indicating an unrelated dispute as the source of the violence. One individual has been detained, and investigations are underway to determine any possible links. The identities of the victims and the alleged shooter have not been disclosed.
Distressingly, guns also played a role in the death of Arianna Davis; she was fatally shot while traveling with her family in Northeast Washington on May 14. She passed away three days later on May 17.
Expressing his sorrow over the circumstances, Chief Robert J. Contee III remarked, “It breaks my heart. As long as we’re discussing deaths caused by illegal handguns in the hands of people who shouldn’t have them, there is still work to be done.”
