Police found 45 trash bags containing human remains in a ravine while searching for several missing call center workers.
The Jalisco state prosecutor’s office in Mexico verified this gruesome discovery on Wednesday, stating the bags were located beneath a forested area. With the use of a helicopter, firefighters and civil defense crews initiated the extraction of some remains from the depths of the Mirador del Bosque gorge near Guadalajara. They intend to continue the recovery effort over the upcoming days.
The search operation was launched following reports received on Tuesday, May 30, about seven missing individuals from a call center located in Zapopan. The body parts were discovered during the course of their search, triggered by an anonymous tip. The Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office, spearheading the investigation, indicated that early data suggests the recovered remains correspond with some of the physical features of the missing employees.
The initial find was a black plastic bag packed with human remains. The search was temporarily halted due to tough terrain and inadequate natural light and resumed the next day. Although the exact count of bodies is yet to be confirmed, the remains were identified as belonging to both men and women.
Identification of the victims, tallying the number of victims, and cause of death determination will be carried out by the Jalisco Forensic Medical Service.
Government records indicate a worryingly high homicide rate in Mexico, with over 110,000 individuals reported missing. Notably, Jalisco, infamous for its drug-related criminal activities, tops the list with 15,000 missing persons.
